33-35 Monier Road is a mixed-use, new build development that lies within one of the key zones for post-Olympic regeneration in east London. The 6 storey building combines 45 residential units, many of them family-sized, with ground level commercial spaces for small creative businesses.
TDS were engaged to develop the design of the project's two large walkways and flights of stairs, which provide the main access to the residential apartments above the ground floor commercial premises. The apartments are arranged around a central open-air internal courtyard and it’s from this communal space the stairs rise to the walkways providing access to individual units. As such they are a prominent architectural feature, requiring great attention to detail not only in their function but also their aesthetic design.
The design of the walkways called for the use of a 50mm bar balustrade, fixed between full height CHS columns. The main landing frames were supported from Schock brackets that were cast into the concrete slabs.
The first fix brackets demanded extra care in their development to allow for and correct any deviation and tolerance issues from the cast in brackets. This, in turn, allowed the main walkway sections to maintain an element of uniformity that assisted the fabrication process and made on-site installation simpler.
The two flights of stairs are of similar design, both with flat bar balustrades and CHS handrails, and had to be fitted between brickwork walls and columns which could not be moved. Our design team solved these issues using some intricate design work on each staircase, and compact connections to maintain the required clearances.
